Musician Brains and Learning Stages
Project and organization: Emre Okçuer
By investigating ''Musician Brains and Learning Stages'', this experiment aims to reveal the interactions between musicians' brains by analyzing data on EEG signals. The purpose of the composition produced for the project is to enable the artists to follow the change of different musical structures during the group's musical performance.
The process, which starts with the performance of the musicians and will continue with scientific research, will be recorded on the one hand, and all visual and audio data to be obtained will form the artistic material and will result in an exhibition.
The project's experiment phase was held on 03 March 2018 at Ufuk University with four artists from Presidential Symphony Orchestra under the supervision of Head of Neurology Department at Rıdvan Ege Hospital. Dr. Alev Leventoğlu and Ankara University Brain Research Center (BAUM) physiologist Prof. Dr. Canan Kalaycıoğlu. An 'Ethics Committee Decision' was issued from Ufuk University to conduct clinical research.
While the artists performed the music composed by Istanbul Bilgi University Music Department Lecturer Enis Gümüş for the project, brain waves of the artists were recorded with the EEG devices attached to their heads. Later, the musicians performed the same composition without connecting the EEG to their heads, while sound and video were recorded.
In addition to the EEG analysis of Professor. Dr. Alev Leventoğlu; Professor Dr. Canan Kalaycıoğlu, METU Informatics Institute-Medical Informatics Department engineer Assoc. Dr. Tolga Esat Özkurt carried out a joint study with METU Electrical and Electronics Engineering Prof. Dr. Uğur Halıcı in later stages of the study and made data analysis on EEG signals transferred to the computer.
Ufuk University Dr. Rıdvan Ege Hospital Prof. Dr. Alev Leventoğlu supported the experiment With two EEG devices and three technicians. Additionally, Medical device company Incekaralar supported the project with a technician in Arte Hospital and additionally brought two EEGs for the experiment
[n]Beyin supported the research by taking the records of the experiment with the shooting team involved in each stage of the project.
